They must be killed before you can escape (or complete the battle). Impossible to flee: A monster who cannot be fled from normally, no matter your evasion, level difference, or whatever. There are random encounters in both the land and the rivers. You can reach the exit on the other maps without it. The airship is only needed to get out on the map in the top right. The Airship must be found via talking to a man you encounter, then going to a lone palm tree in the map and PRESSING A. On all three maps, you will have the use of your canoe, as well as a ship and Airship. There are three “World Maps” so to speak, in the Hellfire Chasm.
To easily get in the guy’s path on the NPC-filled “glittery floor” in the Hellfire Chasm (above the “trespassers will be burninated” guy), TEMPORARILY change the Down Arrow key map to E! (and the A button to some other key) For all three game files to be GAME CLEAR data, you have to defeat Garland three times in a row! Best time is 23:33, while the worst is 27:01. GET TELEPORT FROM MELMOND, AS IT WILL HELP GETTING OUT OF DUNGEONS LIKE THE EARTH CAVERN! On a similar note, GET THE DEATH SPELL FROM CRESCENT LAKE *BEFORE* GOING INTO THE EARTHGIFT SHRINE, as it might help with the desert level Abyss Worms! (treat the battle like a boss battle – Protera / Invisira / Haste) Use the lute in the Temple of Chaos by facing the stone slab and pressing A. Notes to self: Earthgift Shrine help, Hellfire Chasm help, Lifespring Grotto help, and Whisperwind Cove help.
